Hospitals in Maine
Maine has 39 acute care and specialty hospitals, ranging in size and location.
Most of Maine’s hospitals are private nonprofit institutions with volunteer boards of directors. There are several government-run hospitals, two that are organized through regional hospital administrative districts (Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft and Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln) and one that is municipally owned (Cary Medical Center in Caribou).
In 2001, there were 146,000 admissions to Maine’s hospitals for inpatient care and 3.63 million outpatient visits.
