Pines Health Services, Caribou
Requirements:

Board Certified or Eligible in General Surgery, practicing, residents, and fellows will be considered. International graduates who have completed residency and/or fellowship and require sponsorship for an H1-B or J-1 waiver will also be considered.

Position
For over 20 years Pines Health Services has provided care to a service area of 35,000. With 23 physicians and 9 mid-level practitioners health care is delivered in the northern Maine locations of Caribou, Presque Isle, Limestone, and Van Buren. A year ago the practice was designated as a Federally Qualified Health Center offering enhanced access to services for all members of the community and allowing the practice to employ physicians holding H1-B and J-1 visas.

A general surgeon is needed for the Caribou practice. The practice consists of 9 Internists (including 3 Hospitalists) and 3 Family Practitioners all serve as a referral base for surgical services. The hospitalists provide in-patient care including weekends at Cary Medical Center. This is a full time 5 days per week position, including operating time at the hospital. The patient profile includes the full range of ages, with a large cohort of elderly patients with co-morbidities. Call is 1 in 3 shared with vascular and thoracic surgeons.

As an employee of Pines Health Services the successful candidate will receive a competitive salary, generous health and benefits package, professional liability insurance, CME reimbursement, relocation assistance, and education loan repayment if applicable. The physician will also receive an annual allowance for licensing, DEA registration, professional society memberships, and medical journal subscriptions. There is unlimited potential for a General Surgeon joining the Pines Health Services practice in Caribou.

Hospital
The Cary Medical Center in Caribou, Maine, is a 65-bed community hospital with 39 active medical staff members serving a population of 35,000 people. The Medical Center has been providing quality health care services to the citizens of the region for more than 80 years. With the addition of a new Sonogram, CAT Scan, the first Diamond Mammogram in Maine, and the first fixed-base MRI in Northern Maine, this modern hospital utilizes the latest technology to care for area patients. Cary is an organization of caring people who are committed to excellence in patient-centered care and continuous quality improvement.

The hospital’s vision is to aspire to create a healthier community. Programs offered by Cary Medical Center include a memory clinic, incontinence clinic, diabetes services, weight management, cardiac rehab, congestive heart failure clinic, tobacco grant smoking prevention, and health and safety.

  • Recreation
    The warm seasons attract many visitors to northern Maine for kayaking, canoeing and fishing, hiking and backpacking, camping and hunting. Golfers will be excited to learn that Caribou has 10 golf courses to choose from, all within an hour of the city’s center. In the wintertime, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are both extremely popular! The Winter Sports Center, in neighboring Presque Isle, has become an international training ground for competitors in the Biathlon (cross country skiing and target shooting). They hosted the 2004 and 2006 Biathlon World Cup as well as the 2005 Paralympics.

    The community recently kicked-off the construction of a community wellness center for the children in the area that includes a basketball court, walking/running track, and indoor pool. The hospital has been a catalyst in this effort.

    Although northern Maine is the corner of the country, you’ll still be connected to the rest of the world! The nearby city of Presque Isle (20 minutes south of Caribou) has a convenient commercial airport offering direct service to Boston and other locations daily. If you can’t find the flight you need out of Presque Isle, The Bangor International Airport also offers direct flights to many destinations and airline hubs daily. Yes, you can get there from here!

    As you consider moving to Northern Maine, you will want to know that here your children will receive the best education possible. The schools in Caribou are excellent and offer a student-to-teacher ratio of 14:1. Caribou is considered one of the lead districts when it comes to developing innovative education programs and progressive teaching methods. The community offers two public elementary schools, a middle school, and a choice between Caribou Public High School, where over 80% of the graduates pursue post-secondary education and Caribou Technology Center, where students will develop job skills in a variety of fields. (Acadians are the original French settlers of the region comprising what is now the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island; many relocated to Louisiana, establishing that area’s Cajun culture.)
