A General Practitioner is invited to help staff a regional health center in the beautiful recreational community of Jackman, Maine. Very strong clinical skills, including Emergency and Trauma care, are required for this position. The selected candidate will help cover a 24-hour Emergency Room, see scheduled patients of all ages in an outpatient office setting, and supervise an 18-bed nursing home. OB services are not offered locally. Please note: This facility is the sole community provider for medical services in the region, so you may see all types of cases. If you want the opportunity to put all your training to work, this could be the exciting and challenging situation you've been looking for! Qualified candidates may have a background in Internal Medicine if you are capable of managing pediatric patients. Family Practice candidates are welcome, and Physician’s Assistants with substantial experience and the ability to work unsupervised may also be considered. In any case, candidates MUST be highly skilled and very self sufficient, as you will be the first provider to see many accident victims. Experience in geriatrics is a definite plus. The selected provider will work a 4 day per week schedule. You will be teamed with an experienced physician (who came here right from residency 15 years ago), but there will be times when you are the sole physician on duty, with no backup. Call is split between the two providers. Weekend call, consisting of Friday, Saturday and Sunday, is worked every other week. Please note, however, that when covering call, you need only be within radio distance of the clinic, which covers a relatively broad area. This clinic serves a local year-round population of less than 1000 area residents, but thousands of seasonal visitors come to this region throughout the year. The ER sees an average of 600 visits annually. Typical ER visits include injuries from such sources as hunting/GSW, auto, boating, snowmobiling and ATV accidents, drowning victims and moose collisions. An airport ½ mile from the clinic serves as the landing site for Maine’s LifeFlight (helicopter and airplane) service. Patients will be brought in to the ER for you to see, and transported out to larger facilities after stabilization. Aside from the ER, the outpatient clinic sees 10-12 scheduled patients per day. Most of the outpatient practice visits involve seeing patients with chronic diseases including smoking related illnesses and asthma. The clinic is managed by a large Maine hospital system, to which it is connected by intranet for receiving high speed test results and Internet access. In addition to your salary, the hospital system also provides a complete benefits package that includes health insurance (with a co-pay if you require family coverage), an employer sponsored pension plan, and more. Enjoy 5 weeks vacation per year, plus an additional 1-2 weeks for CME, and a budget for CME expenses. Your compensation package may also include relocation expenses, medical education debt assistance, and more. This is a salaried position, but the compensation level is below the state average, at $75-$80,000 per year. Please consider this against a 4-day per week work schedule, a relatively low cost of living (this is a particularly inexpensive area for housing), and the high quality of life this schedule can allow! If desired, additional opportunities are available to moonlight through the parent hospital system for extra income. Due to the relatively slow pace of this practice, physicians can have flexible schedules to accommodate their desire to attend school events, sports activities, etc. The local school is an excellent K-12 program with about 160 students. The average graduating class of 12-15 students includes a high percentage of college-bound graduates, some of whom proceed to some of the best colleges in the country. The Moose River Valley Region is a hunting, fishing, boating, and snowmobiling Mecca. Interestingly, the majority of tourists coming to Jackman do so in the wintertime, and on snowmobile! Other local activities include hiking and biking and backpacking, camping and RVing, all types of boating from kayaking to rafting to sailing, plus cross country and downhill skiing, snowshoeing, and much more. There are too many options to list them all! Jackman is located just 12 miles from Maine’s border with Canada, 100 miles from Quebec City and the same distance from Waterville, Maine (about two hours by car). Jackman is also about an hour and twenty minutes from Sugarloaf, one of Maine’s premier ski resorts. This region offers scenic beauty and more recreational distractions than can be listed. The local real estate environment is fertile. A number of homes are on the market today, and there is beautiful land available on which to build – much of it waterfront on some of the picturesque local streams and lakes. Acreage is both plentiful, and affordable! Because of it’s proximity to the national border, the Jackman area has become home to a number of border patrol and security personnel. This, in part, has spurred a substantial amount of local residential development. |
